A Wonderland That is India....

The panache for grabbing eyeballs is as deeply embroiled in us as the Indian curry.”The India has arrived” phenomenon that has suddenly placed us on the world’s stage is welcome change. The wonders and blunders that we so effortlessly make in the same breath never astonishes us as the world gapes in awe and disbelief. Yes that is our innate talent , it comes naturally to us, something you can find only in this part of the subcontinent.

The land of paradox as it is, the new land of opportunity that gives even America cold feet but gets bullied by China on the other hand; the world’s largest democracy as it boasts of itself but votes for the one and the same family time and again. Anti-incumbency is made to kneel down as this nation appears to suffer from age old pang to be led by monarchy and all in this in the name of democracy; Demographically the youngest nation on the globe , brimming with largest population of under 25 year age group yet led by the oldest Prime-minister in the world. Funny anyone ? That is how it goes ......in India. This is a country where GDP rises as fast as inflation such that one antic es the other for a race. The instance of audacity of the Indian state to offer enormous stock of food grains to the rats while the staggering number of its population goes to sleep without single morsel of food, the list is endless.

But if you think all these incidents deflates our spirit, think again. Optimism is pervasive in this part of the world. India is growing despite itself. In the face of the great depression India has emerged as a resilient economy. The exquisite show that India manged to put up (so what if in the last minute) at the recent Common Wealth Games was another demonstration of the grit India beheld when all the cynics of the world were let loose on us.From getting our own silicon valley in bengaluru to acquiring major companies overseas by our corporate giants, India is dominating the world scene. In a similar vein , the greater belief observers around the globe shown in ours has directly translated into foreign direct investment and this seismic shift unthinkable just decades before has placed us in different league altogether.

No more India is known as the land of snakes and elephants. Today it is viewed as alluring market with immense potential. The attraction which India offes today is not limited to yoga and spirituality but it ranges over overwhelming number of temptations from medical services to cheapest workforce of skilled workers. The contemporary Indian writers and artists have arrested the attention ot the west like never before as Indian students have redefined their presence in foreign campuses. The introduction of RTI was a defining moment in the history of India as it empowered the aam admi and turned the table for the first time. If realized the very recent right to education has the potential to change the face of India forever.

In the world view however, when it comes to Asia it is true that the Dragon is racing in leaps and bouds while the Tiger is panting behind but it is interesting to note that China is a country where 6600 human rights complaints are registered every single day, where even Google is illegitimate. Compare it with the Indian scene where effective and powerful media along with dedicated NGOs assert themselves in such a way that mighty politicians and babus also feel the heat. This trend got momentum in the last decade where issues are scrutinized from TV news channels to talk shows and eventually finds its way to common man’s dining table and when the nation polarizes over the issue, the victim’s voice is multiplied manifold which then becomes difficult to be ignored.

What is most remarkable feat of India today is that we have not lost our soul rather we have embraced it strongly. In the end it would hardly matter if we join the league of developed nations a decade later. It would be interesting to note that saree, the Indian attire is emblematic of Indian spirit; its all encompassing, ever evolving boundaries which embraces one and all just in the same way as saree can be never too long or too short for anybody.
